Facebook Retargeting: Bring Customers Back Without Annoying Them
Retargeting is the most efficient advertising you can do. These people already visited your website, watched your video, or added to their cart. They know you exist. They just did not buy yet. Here is how to get them back without following them around the internet like a stalker.

Who to retarget and in what order
Not all warm audiences are equal. People who abandoned their cart are hotter than people who just visited your homepage. Prioritize your retargeting spend by temperature.
| Audience | Temperature | What to show them |
|---|---|---|
| Cart abandoners | Hottest | The exact product they almost bought, maybe with a small offer |
| Product page viewers | Hot | The product they viewed, social proof, objection handling |
| All website visitors (last 30 days) | Warm | Your best-selling product or a compelling offer |
| Video viewers (75%+) | Warm | The next step in your funnel |
| All website visitors (31-90 days) | Cool | Brand reminder, new product, or re-engagement |
How long to retarget someone
Most people who are going to buy from retargeting will do so within 7-14 days of visiting your site. After 30 days, conversion rates from retargeting drop significantly. After 90 days, it becomes more of a brand awareness play than a conversion play. Set your retargeting windows accordingly: aggressive 7-day window for cart abandoners, 14-30 days for product viewers, 90 days maximum for general site visitors.
The creative for retargeting
Retargeting creative does not need to be your best creative. It needs to be different from what they saw before. If they saw your prospecting ad and did not click, showing them the same ad again will not change their mind. Show them a different angle: a testimonial from a customer like them, a specific objection handled ("Worried about the price? Here is why it is worth it"), or a new piece of social proof they have not seen.
The offer question

Should you offer a discount in retargeting ads? It depends on your product and margins. A discount offer converts well for cart abandoners. But if you always discount in retargeting, customers learn to abandon carts on purpose to wait for the coupon. Alternatively, adding value (free shipping, a free bonus) often converts as well as a discount without training price-sensitive behavior.
Cap your retargeting frequency at 2-3 impressions per week per person. Above that and the same people see your ad every time they open Facebook, which builds resentment, not conversions. Frequency cap is in the ad set settings.
Retargeting budget
Retargeting audiences are small (your website visitors, not the whole world). You do not need much budget here. $5-10 per day can cover a retargeting audience of 2,000-10,000 people at the right frequency. If you are spending more than 30% of your total budget on retargeting, you are probably overspending on warm audiences and underspending on finding new ones.
Questions people ask
How long should I run Facebook retargeting ads?
Run them continuously, but set audience windows carefully. Cart abandoners: 7-14 days. Product viewers: 14-30 days. General site visitors: up to 90 days. After those windows, people are no longer warm enough to justify retargeting CPM.
What is a good conversion rate for Facebook retargeting?
Retargeting typically converts at 2-5x the rate of cold prospecting. If your prospecting converts at 1%, expect retargeting to convert at 2-5%. Below that, something is off (audience too cold, wrong creative, offer not compelling).
Do I need a pixel to run retargeting on Facebook?
Yes. Without the Facebook Pixel on your website, you cannot build website visitor audiences for retargeting. The pixel tracks who visits which pages, so you can show relevant ads to relevant people. Install the pixel before you run any ads.
Why is my Facebook retargeting not working?
Most common reasons: audience is too small (under 500 people), showing the same creative they already ignored, retargeting window is too long (90+ days is too cold), or frequency is too high and people are annoyed by the repetition.
