How Much Does Google Ads Cost? A Small Business Budget Guide

schedule6 min read

There is no price list for Google Ads. You set a daily budget, and you pay each time someone clicks your ad. What a click costs is decided in an auction every time someone searches, so the honest answer to 'how much does it cost' is: as much as you decide, but the click price for your keywords decides how much you get for it. This guide shows how the price is set, how to estimate it for your own keywords before you spend anything, and how to turn that into a budget.

How the price of a click is decided

Every search runs a quick auction between the advertisers who chose that keyword. Google ranks them by bid and by quality: how relevant the ad is to the search, how likely people are to click it, and how good the landing page is. A more relevant ad can sit above a competitor who bids more, and often pays less per click. That is why the same keyword can cost two advertisers very different amounts.

What makes clicks expensive

  • The value of a customer in your industry. When one client is worth thousands (law, insurance, home renovation), competitors bid high, and clicks follow.
  • Urgency. Searches like "emergency", "24 hours" or "today" attract advertisers who know the person will buy now.
  • Competition in your area. A big city with many providers costs more than a small town.
  • Weak quality. An ad that does not match the search, or a slow page, pushes your price up.

Estimate your own click price before you spend

Open Keyword Planner inside Google Ads (it is free) and enter the searches your customers make. Set the location to the area you serve. It shows a low and a high range for 'top of page bid' for each keyword. Expect to pay somewhere inside that range at first. This takes ten minutes and replaces guessing with your own market's numbers.

Turn the click price into a budget

Work backwards from customers, not forwards from money. Three numbers do it: your expected cost per click, the share of clicks that become a lead (a call, a form), and the share of leads that become customers. The table shows what a $30 daily budget buys at different click prices, assuming 1 in 10 clicks becomes a lead:

$615015$60
$15606$150

Now compare the cost per lead with what a customer is worth to you. If one in three leads buys and a customer is worth $400, you can afford up to about $130 per lead and still break even. That number, not the click price, tells you whether Google Ads will pay for itself.

How Google spends your daily budget

Google may spend up to twice your daily budget on a busy day, and less on a quiet one. Over a month it will not charge more than your daily budget times 30.4. So a $30 daily budget means up to about $912 in a month. Plan with the monthly figure, and do not be alarmed by a single high day.

The cheapest way to lower your cost per lead is not a lower bid. It is cutting the searches that never convert. Ten minutes a week in the Search terms report, adding negative keywords, usually saves more than any bid change.

Questions people ask

Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?

No. Google lets you set any daily budget. The practical minimum is the budget that gets you about 10 clicks a day on your main keywords, because below that it takes too long to learn which keywords bring customers.

Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?

On a day with more searches than usual, Google can spend up to twice the daily budget. It balances this out over the month and never charges more than 30.4 times the daily budget for the month.

Do I pay Google or Adstyr for the ads?

You pay Google directly, with the payment method on your own Google Ads account. Adstyr does not handle or mark up your ad spend.
