Facebook Ads for Beginners: Your First Campaign Step by Step
Facebook Ads Manager is not complicated. It feels complicated because the interface was designed for agencies running hundreds of campaigns, not for a business owner running their first ad. This guide cuts through everything you do not need yet and shows you exactly what to do on your first day.

Before you touch Ads Manager: the 3 things you need
- 1A Facebook Business Page (not a personal profile). Go to facebook.com/pages/create. Takes 5 minutes. Your ads will run from this page.
- 2A Facebook Business Manager account at business.facebook.com. This is the umbrella that holds your page, your ad account, and your pixel. Create one if you do not have one.
- 3A payment method added to your ad account. Go to Ads Manager → Billing → Add payment method. Facebook will not let you publish ads without this.
Your first campaign: the structure you need to know
Facebook organises ads in three levels: Campaign → Ad Set → Ad. The Campaign sets the goal (what Facebook optimises for). The Ad Set sets the audience, budget, and schedule. The Ad is the actual image or video the person sees. Most beginners confuse these three levels and end up with settings in the wrong place.
| Level | What you decide here | Beginner mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Objective: Sales, Leads, Traffic, Awareness | Picking Traffic when you want Sales |
| Ad Set | Who sees it, how much you spend, when it runs | Setting budget at campaign level and ignoring ad set |
| Ad | The image/video, headline, body text, CTA button | Uploading low-resolution images or writing 200-word captions |
The right objective for a first campaign
If you sell products online: choose Sales (Conversions). If you collect contact info (dentist, contractor, consultant): choose Leads. If you just want people to visit your website or read content: choose Traffic. Do not choose Awareness or Engagement for your first campaign. Those are brand-building objectives that do not generate direct responses.
Audience targeting for beginners: start broad

No marketing experience needed. Connect your account and know what is working in under 5 minutes.
The most common beginner mistake is over-targeting. Adding 15 interest layers, age ranges, and geographic restrictions until the audience is 10,000 people. Facebook cannot learn anything from a tiny audience. For your first campaign: pick your country or city, set your age range (realistic for your customer, not 18-65 by default), and add 1-2 interests at most. Let the algorithm do the finding. A 500,000 to 2,000,000 person audience is where most first campaigns should start.
Your first campaign does not need to be perfect. It needs to run. The biggest mistake beginners make is spending two weeks in setup and never launching. Set it up, spend 10 per day for 7 days, and then read the data. The data will tell you more than any guide can.
Writing your first ad: the 3-part formula
- 1Hook (first line): Stop the scroll. Ask a question, state a problem, or make a bold claim. "Struggling to get customers through your door?" works better than "We are a family-owned restaurant."
- 2Value (middle): One sentence on what you offer and why it matters to them. Not a list of features. One clear benefit.
- 3CTA (last line): Tell them exactly what to do next. "Book a free call." "Order now and get 20% off." "Download the guide." One action, not three.
Questions people ask
How much money do I need to start Facebook Ads?
10 per day is the practical minimum to get data worth reading. At 5 per day, Facebook serves your ad to its cheapest inventory, not your actual customers. Run at 10/day for 7-14 days before drawing any conclusions. Total first test: 70 to 140.
Do I need a website to run Facebook Ads?
No. If you do not have a website, use Lead Ads (which collect contact info directly in Facebook) or Messenger Ads. You do not need a pixel or a website for these. If you do have a website, install the Facebook Pixel before running any ads — it takes 15 minutes and massively improves targeting over time.
How long before I see results from Facebook Ads?
The learning phase takes 7-14 days. Before that, results are random. Do not change anything in the first 7 days. After 7 days with at least 50 per day in spend, you will have enough data to know if the campaign is working or needs adjustment.
Why was my Facebook Ad rejected?
Common reasons: too much text on the image (Facebook allows up to 20% but prefers less), health or financial claims ("lose weight fast", "make money"), before-and-after images, or targeting that implies knowledge of sensitive characteristics. Read the rejection notice carefully — it almost always tells you the specific rule that was broken.
