Why Your Facebook Ads Are Not Working (And How to Fix It)

schedule6 min de leitura

Most people blame Facebook when their ads do not work. Sometimes it is Facebook. Usually it is one of seven specific things you can actually fix. Here is how to diagnose your campaign and identify the real problem in under 10 minutes.

The diagnostic framework: check in this order

Start at the top and work down. The issues at the top of this list are more common and easier to fix than the ones at the bottom.

Problem 1: Your budget is too low to exit learning phase

Facebook needs approximately 50 conversion events per ad set per week to exit the learning phase. If you are spending $5/day on a product with a $2 cost per click and a 2% conversion rate, you are getting roughly 3 purchases per week. You will never exit learning phase. The algorithm is stuck. Fix: consolidate your budget. One ad set at $10/day beats five ad sets at $2/day. The algorithm needs volume.

Problem 2: Your objective does not match your goal

You want...Wrong objectiveRight objective
More salesTraffic, EngagementSales (with purchase pixel event)
More calls or leadsAwareness, TrafficLead Generation or Traffic to landing page
More people to know you existSales, Lead GenerationAwareness or Reach
More website visitorsEngagement, AwarenessTraffic

Problem 3: Your audience is too small or too specific

An audience under 50,000 people gives Facebook very little room to find buyers. The algorithm cannot optimize across a tiny pool. Symptoms: high frequency, rising costs, declining results after week 2. Fix: broaden your targeting. Remove stacked interest filters. For most small businesses, a radius-based local audience or a broad demographic works better than micro-targeted interest stacks. Facebook's algorithm is better at finding buyers than you are at guessing their interests.

Problem 4: Your creative has ad fatigue

When frequency goes above 3-4, performance drops. The same people see the same ad repeatedly. They start to tune it out. Symptoms: CTR dropping, CPC rising, frequency above 3.5. Fix: create 3-5 new creatives. Test a completely different angle: different format (video vs static), different hook (problem statement vs testimonial vs statistic), different first line of copy.

Problem 5: Your landing page kills the conversion

If your CTR is above 1.5% but your conversion rate is below 1%, the ad is working. The landing page is not. Common landing page problems: page loads slowly on mobile, the offer on the page is different from the ad, there are too many things to click, the form is too long, the page does not look trustworthy. Diagnose this by checking your Google Analytics bounce rate. If more than 70% of ad traffic bounces immediately, it is a landing page problem.

Problem 6: You are changing things too often

Every time you make a significant edit to an ad set (audience, budget over 20%, schedule), it restarts the learning phase. Small businesses often make changes daily because they are anxious about spend. That prevents the algorithm from ever stabilizing. Fix: commit to 7 days of no changes after launching. Look at results weekly, not daily. The data you see on day 2 is meaningless.

If you are seeing results on day 3 and making changes, you are resetting your learning phase every 3 days and never letting the algorithm actually learn. Set it, leave it for 7 days, then evaluate. Impatience is the most common Facebook advertising mistake.

Problem 7: Your offer is not compelling enough

Sometimes the ad, the audience, and the landing page are fine. The offer itself is not differentiated enough. If you are selling the same thing for the same price with the same guarantee as your competitors, Facebook ads will show you the market's actual demand (or lack of it) very quickly. The fix here is business-level, not ads-level: sharpen your offer, add a real guarantee, name a specific problem you solve better than anyone.

Perguntas que as pessoas fazem

How long should I wait before deciding my Facebook ads are not working?

A minimum of 7 days, ideally 14. The algorithm needs time to learn. If you are spending $10/day, give it 2 weeks before making any changes. Early results on days 1-3 are almost always misleading in both directions (unusually good or unusually bad).

What CTR is considered good for Facebook ads?

For feed ads, 1-2% CTR is average. Above 2% is good. Below 0.5% means your creative or copy is not resonating with the audience. CTR alone does not tell the full story: a 3% CTR with 0% conversion is worse than a 0.8% CTR with 3% conversion.

Why are my Facebook ads spending but getting no results?

Most likely causes: wrong objective (you are optimizing for clicks but you want sales), no conversion pixel set up so Facebook cannot optimize for purchases, or audience is cold and needs retargeting infrastructure first. Check Events Manager to confirm your Purchase event is firing before drawing conclusions.

Should I turn off Facebook ads that are not performing?

Give them at least 7 days and 1,000+ impressions before turning off. If after 7 days the CTR is below 0.5%, the frequency is above 4, or the cost per result is more than 3x your target, pause it and create a new variation. Do not edit the existing ad: pause it and start fresh.
