Facebook Ads Audience Targeting: The Complete Guide

schedule6 min read

Targeting is not the most important part of a Facebook campaign. The creative and the offer are. But bad targeting can waste a great creative on the wrong people. Here is how to make sure your message reaches the people who can actually buy from you.

The four audience types and what each does

Audience typeWhat it isBest useRequires
Core audienceDemographics, interests, behaviors, locationCold prospecting when you have no data yetNothing — available from day one
Custom audiencePeople you already have data on (website visitors, email list, app users)Retargeting, exclusions, lookalike seedsPixel or customer list
Lookalike audiencePeople similar to your best customersScale new customer acquisitionCustom audience with 500+ people
Advantage+ audienceFacebook's AI-driven targeting that expands beyond your defined audienceScaling campaigns with strong pixel dataStrong pixel history (50+ monthly conversions)

Core audience: the basics done right

Most advertisers use too many interest layers. Five interest categories stacked on top of each other creates an audience so small the CPM becomes punishing. Start broad and let Facebook's algorithm find the converters within a broad set. For local businesses: location plus age is often enough. For national e-commerce: one or two highly relevant interest categories plus behaviors is better than five stacked interests.

The exclusions most people miss

  • Exclude current customers from new-customer campaigns. You are paying to convert someone who already bought.
  • Exclude your retargeting audiences from your cold prospecting. You want one message for cold traffic and a different one for warm audiences.
  • Exclude people who engaged with your post or clicked your ad but did not convert. Move them to a separate nurture ad set, do not keep serving the same ad.
  • Exclude your competitors' remarketing audiences if you know where they overlap with your page.

Interest targeting: what still works and what does not

Interest targeting has gotten less precise as Facebook deprecated some third-party data. Behaviors (purchase behaviors, device usage, travel frequency) are often more actionable than interests. If you target "fashion" as an interest, you get everyone who has ever interacted with fashion content. If you target "made a clothing purchase in the last 30 days," you get people who actually buy clothes online. Behaviors are more valuable and more expensive. The cost difference is usually justified by better conversion rates.

When to go broad vs narrow

The trend since iOS 14 has pushed Facebook toward broader audiences. Facebook's algorithm has gotten significantly better at finding buyers within large audiences, especially with strong pixel data. If your pixel has 500+ monthly conversions, broad targeting (location + age, or Advantage+ audience) often outperforms precisely layered interests. If your pixel has limited data, narrow targeting with specific interests gives the algorithm guardrails it needs when it cannot learn from behavior data alone.

The biggest waste in Facebook targeting: targeting an audience that is too small. Anything under 50,000 people creates CPM spikes that can make profitable campaigns unprofitable. If your audience size estimate in Ads Manager shows under 50,000, expand before you launch.

Questions people ask

What is the best audience size for Facebook ads?

500,000 to 5 million is the sweet spot for most small business campaigns. Under 50,000 causes high CPMs. Over 10 million and your targeting becomes too diffuse for anything below a very large budget. Scale from narrow to broad as your pixel builds data.

Should I use detailed targeting or Advantage+ audience on Facebook?

Test both. Advantage+ audience works well for accounts with strong pixel data (50+ monthly conversions). Detailed targeting works better for new accounts or niche products where broad targeting finds the wrong audience. Many advertisers see Advantage+ outperform after 4-6 weeks of strong pixel data.

What are the best interests to target on Facebook?

Competitor brand names (if available), specific publications your audience reads, and purchase behaviors tend to outperform generic interests. "Inc Magazine readers" is more specific than "entrepreneurship." Narrow interests with high relevance beat broad interests with high volume.

How do I find my target audience on Facebook?

Start with your best existing customers: age range, location, what problems they were trying to solve when they found you. Build a custom audience from your customer list. Use Meta's Audience Insights to find what interests and behaviors index high for that audience. Then build a lookalike from the customer list and use Insights to validate what interests to layer.
