Google Ads for Small Business: Your First Campaign, Step by Step
Google Ads works differently from Facebook. On Facebook you interrupt people who were not looking for you. On Google, people type what they need and you show up at the moment they are searching. That makes Google the best place to start when people already search for what you sell: a plumber, a dentist, a lawyer, a moving company, a specific product. This guide walks through a first Search campaign and the handful of settings that decide whether your budget goes to customers or disappears.

Start with one Search campaign
Google offers Search, Performance Max, Display, Video, Shopping and more. For a first campaign, pick Search. Your ad is a text ad that appears on the Google results page when someone searches for your keywords. You choose the searches, you see exactly which ones triggered your ad, and you pay only when someone clicks. Performance Max can work later, but it spreads your budget across Google's whole network and shows you much less about where the money went. That is a bad trade when you are still learning what works.
Five settings to change before you launch
- 1Locations: target only the area you actually serve. Then open Location options and choose 'Presence: people in or regularly in your included locations'. The default also includes people who are merely interested in your area, which can mean someone on another continent reading about your city.
- 2Networks: untick the Display Network. When it is on, your Search budget also buys banner placements on websites, which rarely bring a local business real customers.
- 3Bidding: with no conversion history, start with Maximize clicks and set a maximum cost per click so one expensive keyword cannot eat the day. Switch to Maximize conversions once conversion tracking has recorded a few dozen results.
- 4Ad schedule: if nobody answers the phone at night, do not pay for clicks at night. Limit ads to the hours someone can respond.
- 5Auto-apply recommendations: turn them off. Google can otherwise change your keywords, bids and ads on its own.
Pick 10 to 20 keywords that mean someone wants to buy
Good keywords describe a need plus intent: 'emergency plumber near me', 'teeth whitening price', 'buy running shoes size 44'. Weak keywords describe a topic: 'plumbing', 'teeth', 'shoes'. People searching for a topic are often researching or looking for free information. Start small and specific. Ten keywords that bring buyers beat two hundred that bring browsers. Group them into ad groups by theme, so each ad can match the search closely.
Write the ad for the search, not for your brand
A Responsive Search Ad takes up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters, and Google mixes them. Put the service and the place in at least a few headlines ('Plumber in Haifa', 'Same-Day Plumbing Repairs'). Add a reason to choose you (licensed, open Saturday, free quote) and a clear next step. Add sitelinks, a call extension with your phone number, and your location. These make the ad bigger on the page at no extra cost per click.

Set up conversion tracking before you spend
Without conversion tracking, Google can only optimize for clicks, and clicks are not customers. Track what actually matters: a submitted form, a call from the ad, a call from your website, a purchase. Connect the Google tag to your site, or import calls. This is the one setup step owners most often skip, and it is the one that decides whether the campaign can ever improve on its own.
Check the Search terms report every few days for the first two weeks. It shows the exact searches that triggered your ad. Every irrelevant search you find there ('free', 'jobs', 'course', a competitor's name) goes on your negative keyword list, so you never pay for it again.
What to expect in the first month
- Days 1 to 3: impressions and the first clicks. Do not judge results yet.
- Week 1 to 2: read the search terms, add negative keywords, pause keywords that only bring irrelevant searches.
- Week 3 to 4: look at cost per lead or cost per sale, not cost per click. A cheap click that never converts is the most expensive click you can buy.
- After a month: move budget toward the ad groups that produce customers.
Preguntas que hace la gente
How much should a small business spend on Google Ads to start?
Enough to get at least 10 clicks a day on your main keywords. Check the estimated cost per click in Google's Keyword Planner and multiply by 10. If clicks cost $3, start around $30 a day. Below that, data arrives so slowly that it takes months to learn anything.
Should I use Google Ads or Facebook Ads first?
If people already search for what you sell, start with Google Search, because you reach them at the moment of need. If they do not know they need it yet (a new product, an impulse buy, a visual offer), Facebook and Instagram usually work better because you can create the demand.
Do I need a website to run Google Ads?
A Search ad must lead somewhere, usually a page on your website. Call-only setups and Google Business Profile help local businesses, but a simple, fast page that matches the ad and has one clear action will almost always convert better.
